Palisades New Build

We stepped into a 5,000‑square‑foot spec house mid-construction for a young family relocating to Washington, D.C., determined to turn its forgettable builder-grade shell into something soulful and personal. Rather than gutting the new but bland kitchen, we leaned on “the great Band-Aid”: painting the entire kitchen—cabinets, windows, and all—in a dramatic inky black to imbue instant depth and elegance. We then introduced millwork and trim painted throughout to create a gallery-like feel and softened cold corners with built-in bookshelves to form a cozy nook. By using artful, strategic touches instead of major renovations, we infused charm and gave the home warmth, sophistication, and soul.

"The [project] is an example of how much charm you can really infuse into a builder‑grade house—with a little compromise, of course.” - Alyssa Clough, Domino (2024)

"Tearing out the newly completed (and totally forgettable) white kitchen would have been not only financially irresponsible but wasteful. So Feldman proposed painting it all black—from the cabinets to the windows and every surface in between." - Lydia Geisel, Domino (2024)
