We gave a Washington, D.C., home the feel of a Manhattan townhouse by layering elegance, polish, and unexpected flair. Almost-white walls and classic furniture created a traditional foundation, while bold choices like a pair of Alex Katz paintings, lush green-upholstered Italian bergères, and a vintage Ming-style coffee table added drama and sophistication. Schumacher and Fortuny textiles, early-19th-century Viennese pieces, and thoughtful architectural details worked together to strike a balance: refined enough for formal entertaining, yet full of energy and character that nods to New York style.

“The white walls and largely traditional furniture forms qualify it as conservative enough for a diplomat drop by, but the details display a Big Apple level of ambition and polish.” - Ted Loos, Introspective (2022)

"In contrast to the requests of many homeowners these days—which tend toward the casual—the brief here was actually to button things up a little, and to suffuse the place with a grown-up calm." - Ted Loos, Introspective (2022)
